Previously we had shared with you a 3-step guide on things to consider before renting a car. Here in Part 2, we will walk you through the process of collecting and returning your rental car and what are the things you should take note and look out for.
Step 4: Collecting the Car
When you collect your rental car, most rental companies will ask you to bring along the rental confirmation details, your NRIC (or identification documents), driving licence and credit card. Any other potential drivers of the rental vehicle are advised to come along as well in case they need to sign any additional documents. You will need to inform the rental company of your intentions to drive into Malaysia so that they can register the vehicle with Malaysia’s Road Transport Department and get the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP). Ensure that this is done or you might be refused entry at the customs checkpoint, or vehicle insurance may not apply in the event of any unfortunate accident.
When presented with the vehicle, do a thorough check for any prior damages – both exterior AND interior. It is important that all damages (major or minor) are highlighted to the staff before taking over the vehicle to avoid being charged for these damages upon returning the car.
Also, do take note of the petrol tank level before you drive off. Often, rental companies will require you to fill up the tank before you return the car, so make sure you have received the car with a full tank to avoid being shortchanged!
Step 5: Driving Your Car
Drive your rented vehicle like your own!
Do note that most rental vehicles are covered by limited insurance in the event of any road accident (touch wood!), all damages are to be borne by the hirer. To protect yourself and your loved ones, we will recommend you to opt for the additional Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) and Collision Damage Waiver as a safeguard, if your rental company offers them. If you rented your vehicle from ETHOZ and are involved in a traffic accident, please remain calm and call the ETHOZ hotline for immediate assistance. You may want to refer to our Accident Checklist for things to do if you are involved in a road accident.
It is important that you rent from a reliable company. Bigger companies, like ETHOZ, have their own 24/7 emergency hotline and road assistance teams that can come to your assistance should your car breakdown anywhere in Singapore.
Step 6: Returning Your Car
When you return your vehicle, please take note of the stated return time. If you passed that return timing, you will likely be billed for the late return. This late return penalty varies between companies; from hourly charges to an additional day of rental.
Upon returning the vehicle, make sure the rental company staff do a check on the vehicle and confirm that there are no damages to it. This is to safeguard yourself in case the rental company charges you for any damages not caused by you and deduct these charges from your refundable deposit.
As we have mentioned in Step 4 above, remember to fill up the tank before returning the car. Otherwise, most rental companies will charge you for the fuel top-up which is usually more expensive as compared to the petrol station prices. To avoid incurring unnecessary costs, it is best that you make a detour to the petrol station to fill up the tank before returning the vehicle.
